Resources and Services for Law Alumni

Congratulations to the class of 2021! As new Duke Law alumni, you are eligible for continuing access to a number of library resources. As we shared in our post from March 26 , recent Law School graduates can access Bloomberg Law , Lexis , and Westlaw following graduation, with different restrictions set by each research service. There are many other campus library resources available to all alumni, not just recent graduates. An important first step is to register for a Duke OneLink Account . Any campus resource available to alumni will have a Duke OneLink login in addition to a NetID login.   Alumni with OneLink accounts can access research databases like ProQuest, JSTOR, and several e-book platforms via the Duke Alumni Library Online Access page. While alumni are welcome to use the online catalog to determine whether Duke has access to a resource, online databases are only available to alumni via the special alumni access portal. Alumni can also create a RefWorks account to...

Free & Low-Cost Legal Research Options

It's about that time of year when May graduates lose their extended access to Lexis Advance and Bloomberg Law . Both services allow recent Law School graduates to continue using their academic passwords for 6 months. ( Westlaw 's post-graduation access lasts a little longer; see Library Services for Recent Grads/Alumni for an overview.) No need to despair, though – several legal research options are available for no cost or low-cost. First, check with your state or local bar association, which may offer free access to the low-cost legal research services Fastcase or Casemaker . Currently, the bar associations in 49 states and the District of Columbia include at least one of these research services as a membership benefit (California, the only holdout, contains many county and local bar associations which provide members with access to one or the other). The Goodson Law Library's map of Legal Research via State Bar Associations has been updated to reflect the latest ch...

Interlibrary Loan Service over Holiday Break

Due to reduced staffing over the holiday break, users of the Law Library's Interlibrary Loan service may experience some delays in request processing from December 22, 2007-January 1, 2008. During this period, users may still pick up and return interlibrary loan materials to the Circulation Desk during regular business hours . However, new requests may take a bit longer to arrive than usual. You can check the status of your interlibrary loan requests at any time by logging in to the ILLiad system with your NetID and password. Regular processing of new interlibrary loan requests will resume on Wednesday, January 2, 2008. We appreciate your patience during the holiday season.

Test-Drive ILLiad!

This semester, the Duke Law Library will be implementing a new system for interlibrary loan (ILL) service. Items which are not available at any Duke campus libraries will be requested through ILLiad. (ILLiad may be familiar to any law students who attended Duke for undergrad, as it is the same system used by the Perkins Library.) Join the “early adopters” by visiting the new ILLiad site at https://illiad.lib.duke.edu/illiad/NDL . ILLiad offers several advantages over the previous web request form , including the ability to save personal information and preferences, track the status of pending requests, view your request history, download electronically-received documents, and submit renewal requests online. However, the first time you access ILLiad with your NetID and password, you will be asked to register with the system. Please report any problems with the service to the Reference Desk .
